nursing home abuse and neglect elderly couple

Nursing Homes Must be Held Accountable for Abuse and Neglect

I recently read a report saying that elderly are abused at 1 in 3 nursing homes.  I was absolutely sickened.  My thoughts were: How can this be possible?  How can this be true?  What can we do about it?  What can we do to reduce the instances of elder abuse?

Reports of serious, physical, sexual and verbal abuse are "numerous" among the nation's nursing homes, according to a congressional report.  A study found that 30 percent of nursing homes in the United States were cited for instances of abuse over a two-year period.  Common problems included untreated bedsores, inadequate medical care, malnutrition, dehydration, preventable accidents, and inadequate sanitation and hygiene, the report said.  Many of the abuse violations caused harm to the residents, the report said.  How is it possible to have these problems?  Untreated bedsores?  Preventable accidents?  Inadequate sanitation and hygiene?  The nursing home’s primary job is to ensure that the facility’s employees cared for the residents in such a manner and in such an environment as to promote maintenance or enhancement of the quality of life of each resident.  This requirement is simple – and it is the minimum standard.  Nursing homes are compensated handsomely to do this.  We as a society have to hold these facilities accountable when they fail to uphold their end of the bargain.  If a nursing home has caused injury to you or a loved one, wherever you are - Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, or elsewhere – call my office for a free consultation.
